Our online shop is intended to help out traders and fair-goers during the present Covid-19 pandemic by offering a means to continue what we feel is more than mere shopping and is, in fact, a fulfilling part of many people’s lifestyle. Many regular fair-goers and traders alike have been with us since we first started in 1989, and in that time, we have formed a community of likeminded, curiosity-driven people who have bonded over a mutual love of history, numismatics, finely-crafted items, niche interests and so much more. For that reason, we would like to continue putting regular fair-goers in touch with the traders they already know and trust.
With that in mind, please bear in mind that we are not a conventional online marketplace. Our shop is intended to be a proxy for real-life, in-person transactions at fairs. “Vendors” involved in the shop must already be known to us and have exhibited at more than one fair in the past. Our ideal buyer is also someone who is familiar with the fairs and perhaps already knows many of the traders from whom they might buy. As a result, we are simply providing the medium and the online space at which traders and buyers can meet, and we offer no form of mediation in that process.
This project is founded on that trust and we hope this is what will make it different from conventional online purchasing of unseen goods from unknown persons. Equally, our shop is founded on the trust that we have with traders. As such, the 5% sales commission is based on an honour system. This means that we trust traders, on completion of a sale, to transfer to us (via Paypal, cheque or bank transfer), 5% of the final sale price agreed with the customer. We ask that you keep account of these sales and transfer the appropriate amount at the end of each month, if not before.
Interacting with customers
We encourage customers to get in touch with the trader if they are seriously considering a purchase and to ask any questions that they feel relevant; however, we ask that you try to provide as much information as you would at a fair, even if the question is not directly asked. We also ask that you provide additional information that may not be apparent in an online setting, such as weight and physical size of an item. The more information you provide, the more likely your chances of making a successful sale.
We know that traders are not primarily online salespeople, but we ask that you keep an eye on your emails if you have products listed so as to ensure a relatively speedy reply to customer queries. Just as you would not leave an interested customer waiting unattended at your stand, please don’t leave them waiting on a reply by email for any longer than necessary.
Similarly, once a sale is arranged, we ask that you arrange delivery as soon as possible so as not to keep the customer waiting any longer than necessary. Please think carefully about the possible cost of shipping when calculating your sales price for an item and be ready to post any item once sold. We ask that you then remove the item from your listings so as to avoid disappointing other interested customers. You are responsible for the safe and timely shipping of any items listed and/or sold; we recommend using registered post or courier so as to have a record of receipt. We recommend that you receive payment prior to posting any item. We are not liable for any losses in this regard, howsoever caused or incurred.
Returns, Refunds, Complaints and Liability
Customers are encouraged to contact the trader (with civility and politeness) and try to seek resolution directly in the event that a problem arises with an item. We will not be liable for refunds and returns in the event that such is requested and/or deemed necessary. We cannot return your 5% fee in the event that you refund a customer, however, if you inform us of this fact, we can credit the amount to your account for future fees.
If we receive one or more serious complaints about a trader, we will have to revoke their access to the online shop. This is not intended as a mark of disrespect and it by no means rules the trader out from participating in fairs, to which they and/or their stock may simply be better suited, but it must be done in order to preserve the reputation of all traders. In the event that this happens, you will be informed by email, your listings will be removed from the shop and no further listings can be accepted; however, it does not imply the accepted veracity of any claims made within the complaint, and it does not reflect on your individual reputation or standing with us.
